Liv vs Man U: Key Battles
Kelvin Leong takes a look at the players who are most likely to make a difference in the big game tonight.
Fernando Torres vs Rio Ferdinand
El Nino is one of the best strikers in world football at the moment while Ferdinand is fast becoming the same error-prone kid he used to be at Leeds United.
Ferdinand's recent outings with both club and country have seen him make school-boy errors with many fans even going as far as to suggest he is past his prime.
If he continues to show a nonchalant attitude against Torres at Anfield tonight, he will be punished for his mistakes.
Torres has played a lot of football for the past 12 months. But when it comes to a game like Liverpool vs United, players forget their tiredness and even if they are carrying a slight knock, they will bring their 'A' game to the field.
El Nino's strength lies in his power to outmuscle defenders while also possessing the pace to get behind a high defensive line.
This could be the key match-up of a tight game and whoever comes out tops will emerge on the winning side.
Jamie Carragher vs Michael Owen
Carragher and Ferdinand can confidently take their place in the history books as two of the best central defenders the English top flight has ever seen but neither of them are playing like one!
Carra has been outpaced by strikers this season and teams are beginning to target him as the weak link to exploit.
With former teammate, Michael Owen fit and raring to go at Anfield, I reckon Ferguson may be tempted to throw Owen in from the start.
Owen was dumped out of Liverpool despite pledging his allegiance to them and he will definitely be keen to show just what the Reds have missed out on.
He may have lost a bit of his pace but his positioning sense and knowledge of the way Liverpool defend could very well see him as the trump card for United.
Glen Johnson vs Patrice Evra
Two of the best overlapping full-backs in the Premiership at the moment will come face-to-face at Anfield.
Johnson's marauding runs down the right have been one of the few bright sparks for Liverpool this season while Evra has been asked to be more offensive since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.
It could end up with both players canceling each other out of the game but it will be interesting to see how this battle maps out.
Both teams lack width this season and if Johnson and Evra are given orders to be more defensive-minded, things could get narrow with play concentrated around the middle of the park.
