Juan may be Liverpool’s Mata

Rafael Benitez could sign Juan Mata in the January transfer window, a move that could spell the end of Ryan Babel’s Anfield career.

Mata has been decimating Primera Liga defences this season but Valencia are looking to offload the midfield wizard for a reported £16.5million due to financial constraints.

Benitez is optimistic about the deal with his former club as Mata's contract only lasts till 2012, with the player in question getting paid a paltry £10,000 a week, which is little for a budding football superstar. Mata has also turned down improved offers from Los Che in the summer.

Mata's father Juan Snr, also his agent, said to The Sun: "We want Valencia to recognise the kid's true quality, and it's not only a matter of money."

Juan Jnr added: "This matter is all down to the club and my agent. Benitez is a big coach but I just want to concentrate on my game without any distractions."
