Taylor: Ferdinand has lost his legs

Former England manager, Graham Taylor feels that Rio Ferdinand will never be the same player he once was.

Ferdinand has had to endure a tough season for club and country with some glaring errors in recent months.

Despite Sir Alex Ferguson's backing of the giant defender, many have doubts if Ferdinand still has what it takes to be a world-class defender.

Speaking to BBC Radio Five Live, Taylor said: What I am going to say will probably surprise a lot of people, but I think Rio Ferdinand has lost his legs.

"He struggled to keep up with Fernando Torres in Manchester United's game against Liverpool last week and I just don't think he is - or will be - the wonderful player he once was."

Ferdinand will need to regain his form and get back to the commanding central defender he once was if he wants a starting berth in Fabio Capello's England squad at the 2010 World Cup.

Even his status at United has come under threat with the emergence of Jonny Evans.

Tough times ahead for the former Leeds United player.
