Adebayor: I almost quit football
Emmanuel Adebayor revealed that he almost walked away from football if not for the love from Manchester City.
The Togo captain was on the fateful bus ride which saw three of his colleagues killed by rebels in Cabinda as the national team made their way to Angola for the 2010 African Cup of Nations.
The team subsequently pulled out of the tournament with many of the players left distraught and given unconditional time-off to recover from the traumatic experience.
The Mirror reported that Adebayor is still not fully over the incident but is soldiering on because his club City have been giving him the support and love he needs.
The striker said: At one point I didn't think I would ever see City's stadium and the fans again.
"I have been through the most difficult moment in my life, and it was incredibly hard,
"There is a big Manchester City family and there is a lot of love there. I am so grateful to everyone for helping me through this,
"I am glad now that these terrible moments are behind me and now life goes on and that means playing football for City and hopefully being successful.
"Through all the difficulties the fans were there with me calling my name and sending me messages of support, I was very moved by the way they did that.
"The club too did everything they could for me checking I was ok and giving me time before coming back. At the end of the day the most important thing is the relationship between the players and the club and the players and the fans and I feel I have a good relationship here with both.
"The people who work at City and watch City have faith in my ability and faith in what I am doing. I have been through a difficult moment in my life and they have proved that."
Adebayor went on to state that he thought CAF's decision to ban the Togo national team from the next two African Cup of Nations is an unjust one.
He added: "Our own head of state ordered us to return because he judged that the threat surrounding our squad hadn't gone away. We are only ambassadors and we were obliged to returned."
Adebayor put his grief aside at the weekend and manage to score a goal and help City to a 2-0 home win over Portsmouth.
