Pulis happier than last season

Pulis happier than last season

Stoke manager Tony Pulis admits he will get more satisfaction this season in securing the club's top flight status.

Pulis is on target to realise that ambition after his side drew 1-1 against Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday.

Tuncay opened the scoring in the first half following a trademark long throw from Rory Delap before David Nugent equalised for the home side.

Pulis said: "Staying up this season would give me more pleasure than last year. Everyone tells you about second season syndrome and history proves that.

"If we can stay in this league the future is very bright for us. We have 35 points with 10 games to go so our aim is to get to 40 as quickly as possible.

"Obviously then we will try and better what we did last year (45 points). If we can do this will have been an absolutely remarkable season."

Pulis is hoping to have some of his injured players back for the home game on Saturday against Aston Villa.

Ricardo Fuller, Glenn Whelan, Danny Higginbotham, Salif Diao and James Beattie all sat out the Burnley match while Ryan Shawcross was suspended.

However Matthew Etherington returned to the team following a knee problem and played the full game.

Pulis believes Fuller will recover in time after the striker fell over and jarred his back in the FA Cup defeat by Chelsea on Sunday.

"He has quite a bit of swelling" said the Stoke boss. "But we think he has a good chance of playing on Saturday.

"We were disappointed Ric didn't make it against Burnley and he was a big miss for us.

"With the injuries we had and the people suspended it was a good result for us. The added bonus was Matthew coming through the 90 minutes."

Pulis is pleased with Tuncay's progress after the former Middlesbrough midfielder scored his fifth goal of the campaign.

He added: "I thought he was smashing. He tired at the end. It was a frantic game but he kept going.

"He took his goal brilliantly. He was on the move and it was a great finish. He has good qualities."
