Ferguson: We deserved the Shield!
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson felt his side fully deserved to win the Community Shield after beating Chelsea 3-1.
Ferguson said after the match: "It was a decent display and I'm very happy players such as Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen and Park Ji-sung are nearer match fitness.
"Some of the football was very good at times. I think we deserved to win it.
Meanwhile, Rooney has yet to shake off his World Cup form after another barren outing and was replaced by Javier Hernandez at half-time.
On the bright side, Ferguson is glad his stars got a final run out before the season proper commences next week.
"I don't know if Wayne and Park are ready yet. The internationals in the coming week are a bonus for them and I'm delighted they are involved. Michael doesn't have that problem but we'll step up his training.
"We've got so many players away but having the (first Premier League) game (against Newcastle) on the Monday helps us.
"I don't think anyone can understand why we've got an international friendly before the season starts but we've been given a bit of luck through that."
On Hernandez's goal, the Scot joked on Sky Sports: "He'll not try it again - it was a quite peculiar goal.
"But he's quick to get in the box - he's a really good finisher. He's got a bubbly character and speaks good English. He's settled in very well."
And Ferguson is expecting big things from Berbatov this season, adding: "He has great talent.
"You can't dispute the man's ability - he's a genius at times. Maybe it's going to be his season now."
Asked whether his visit to Craven Cottage on Saturday was to check on their early season opponents Fulham or Mesut Ozil - who was lining up for friendly opponents Werder Bremen - Ferguson said: "I was there to look at Fulham.
"Ozil is interesting a lot of teams but at this moment I trust the ones I've got. I've got a really good squad of players."
