Rooney backs Scholes for England

Unbelievably, it has been six years since Scholes retired from international football but the legendary United midfielder has been
in sparkling form for his club so far this season.

"I'd like to see him playing. He's fantastic, one of the best players in the country," Rooney said.

"But it's his decision and [manager] Fabio Capello's whether he wants to try to pick him. It's down to them."

However, while Scholes might be able to help England kickstart their qualifying campaign for the 2012 Euro Championships in style, at 35 it seems unlikely that the midfielder would still be part of the setup in two years time.

Capello unsuccessfully tried to coax Scholes to play for England at the FIFA 2010 World Cup.

Scholes has won 65 England caps.
