Loyal MacDonald favourite to be boss

Aston Villa general manager Charles Krulak insists the club's next manager will not be someone who does not value loyalty.

The former Vietnam veteran, who accused ex-manager Martin O'Neill of thinking he was bigger than the club after he quit, is keen to make a long-term appointment for the role.

"There are those who seem to think we can waltz into any club and get a manager to leave their club and come to ours," he was quoted in the Sun as saying.

"Did it ever occur to you that I - speaking as a fan and former Marine, who values loyalty - may not want a manager who would up and desert his club for additional money? I may well think such a manager might not be right for our club. I am not sure getting someone who has baled out from their club is something I'd be comfortable about."

The news will be a boost to caretaker-boss Kevin MacDonald's chances after  he finally threw his hat into the ring to be considered for the job on Tuesday.

MacDonald has been employed at Villa in various capacities since 1995. He now joins a five-man shortlist of candidates for the full-time role.

"We have thoroughly researched potential candidates and have reached out to a variety of contacts we have within the game for advice and guidance, we well as keeping key staff at villa park informed and focused," Villa's chief executive Paul Faulkner said.

USA coach Bob Bradley, who was considered one of the favourites to land the job, appears to have put himself out of the running after signing a new contract with the national side.
