Goalkeepers

Pepe Reina

Reina makes a spectacular save

Pepe Reina (Liverpool)

Even as numerous others deserted, the battle-hardened Spaniard stayed with what seemed like a sinking ship early in the season. What's more, he put in some of the best keeping performances through the campaign to help Liverpool tide over a fair few crises. One of Kenny Dalglish's most important mandates will be to ensure Reina stays at Anfield for the near-future.

Ben Foster (Birmingham City)

Foster, at times, been the difference between a Birmingham win and a loss, as he highlighted in the early season win over Chelsea where he pulled off countless magnificent saves. His performances between the sticks might yet prove crucial in saving the Midlands' side from relegation. But the highlight of his season will remain the man-of-the-match performance in the Carling Cup final win over Arsenal.

Edwin Van der Sar (Manchester United)

There aren't too many players closing in on their 40th birthday able to produce the type of displays Edwin van der Sar has this season. Manchester United's undisputed number one goalkeeper for the last five seasons, the big Dutchman has been instrumental again in leading the Red Devils' chase for silverware.

Joe Hart (Manchester City)

Hart has shown why he is now regarded as England's first choice goalkeeper. His shot-stopping ability and calm demeanour has been a huge driving factor behind Manchester City's push towards UEFA Champions League qualification this season. The confidence he instills in his side means City are not afraid push forward and attack with Hart behind in goal.

Jussi Jaaskalainen (Bolton)

The Bolton custodian has again proved why he is among the most highly rated goalkeepers in the Barclays Premier League - even at the age of 35. His assured displays have been integral to his side's impressive climb up the table this season.

Defenders

Nemanja Vidic

Vidic and Dawson clatter heads

Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United)

The Serbian centre-back has emerged as one of Manchester United's key figures. His impressive and at times impenetrable performances at the heart of United's defence have been key to his side's charge in the title race and the Champions League this season.

Michael Dawson (Tottenham)

It is never easy to put in one's best when you are confronted with a revolving door of defensive partners. But Dawson has been the plaster that has held Harry Redknapp's ragged bunch of defenders together - his whole-hearted defending and fabulous blocks protecting Heurelho Gomes from some serious bombardment.

Vincent Kompany (Manchester City)

Kompany has been the Premier League's most consistent performer this season. Good in the air and on the ground, the intimidating Belgium centre-back has been so influential and so good that there have been calls in the media for manager Roberto Mancini to make him his new captain should Carlos Tevez leave in the summer.

David Luiz (Chelsea)

The centre-back's impact on the Premier League has been nothing short of sensational. The all-action Brazilian announced himself by scoring vital goals against Manchester United and Manchester City in the same month. His swashbuckling approach has been a breath of fresh air to the Stamford Bridge faithful, and his arrival has coincided with a revival in Chelsea's performances.

Leighton Baines (Everton)

Leighton Baines has been Everton's best player in a topsy-turvy season. The England left-back hardly gets the recognition he deserves because of Ashley Cole's dominance in the position in the Premier League over the last few seasons. Perhaps now is his time to get the plaudits he deserves.

Midfielders

Smair Nasri

Samir Nasri (Arsenal)

Easily the best player for Arsenal this season. The Frenchman has been the mastermind and choreographer of the Gunners attack and was among the nominees for the PFA Player of the Year award. His performances in the absence of the talismanic Cesc Fabregas were especially brilliant.

Gareth Bale (Tottenham)

PFA Player of the Year winner Gareth Bale has been, at times this season, unplayable. The Tottenham Hotspur wing wizard has both pace and power to burn and caught the eye with some cracking goals. When opposition managers sit down to plan tactics, their first order of business is probably to find a way of stopping the nitro-boosted winger.

Scott Parker (West Ham United)

Unlucky to miss out on the PFA Player of the Year award, Parker has been one of the main reasons why West Ham are still in with a chance of avoiding relegation. His performances have been inspirational; no one wears his heart on the sleeve quite like the midfielder.

Charlie Adam (Blackpool)

The Blackpool captain has been nothing short of a revelation this season. He has been at the heart of all things good for the Tangerines and was nearly rewarded with a move to Liverpool in January. When Sir Alex Ferguson himself says his corners alone are worth £10 million, you know you're watching someone special.

David Silva (Manchester City)

The man who brought much-needed flair to what was a talented but staid Manchester City side. With his twinkle-toed brilliance, the former Valencia man has had the Premier League emitting a collective gasp every time he has stepped on to the pitch. If he hadn't been a footballer, Silva would have succeeded as a magnificent tailor, given his talent for threading the eye of the needle.

Strikers

Carlos Tevez

Dimitar Berbatov (Manchester United)

He's been described as many things - everything from world class to being downright lazy. Whatever the case, Dimitar Berbatov means goals for Manchester United this season. A hat-trick in a 5-0 win over Birmingham in January 2011 made him the first United player since Ruud van Nistelrooy (in 2002-03) to score three hat-tricks in one campaign.

Carlos Tevez (Manchester City)

What would Manchester City do without him? The Argentinean striker has once again delivered for his side this season and is their top-scorer in all competitions. His ability to get into goal-scoring positions is second to none while his refusal to recognize a lost cause is indicative of a man who just will not give up, no matter what the situation.

Nani (Manchester United)

The Portuguese wing wonder has finally lived up to the expectations since his 2007 move to Old Trafford, and has now firmly established himself as a key player at Manchester United. He has constantly carved open defences this season with his scintillating pace and bag of tricks; regularly weighing in with goals and assists.

Luis Suarez (Liverpool)

He may only have landed on English shores in January, but the Uruguayan has wasted no time in becoming a Kop hero. His display against Manchester United especially, revealed what he is capable of against the best of sides. Keep an eye on this one - he's going to terrify Premier League defences for seasons to come, if he can maintain focus and fitness.

Rafael van der Vaart (Tottenham)

United fans may disagree, but Van der Vaart is surely the signing of the season. Getting the Dutchman for 8 million pounds was one of the biggest coups Harry Redknapp has pulled off his career. VDV has flourished in the freedom afforded to him and with Peter Crouch made one of the most lethal pairings up front in the Premier League.
