Essien unfazed by competition

Michael Essien is not fazed by the intense competition for starting places that exists at the London club.

Essien has established himself as one of the best players in the Premier League following his superb performances in the last couple of seasons.

With Claude Makelele on his way to PSG, Essien will likely be battling with Obi Mikel for the holding midfielder role, with Deco, Michael Ballack and Frank Lampard likely to play in a more attacking role.

New Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari is still working on his squad for next season, with AC Milan's Brazilian superstar Kaka apparently top of his wish-list.

Despite the depth of quality in the Chelsea side, Essien belives the competition for places will only spur him on to even better performances.

"When the competition gets keener it brings out the best in all the players," said the 25-year-old.

"Last season we signed new players and people thought I could lose my place. But I fought and stayed to maintain my position."
