Raul: No award for Casillas
Real Madrid skipper Raul believes Iker Casillas will not win the European Footballer of the Year crown.
The goalkeeper has been impressive form recently, have skippered Spain to their Euro 2008 victory in Vienna. Despite his superb performances, Raul is adamant that Casillas will not clinch the European Football of the Year title.
Instead, the Real captain rates Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo highly to clinch the award. Next on his list is Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, followed by Valencia star David Villa.
He said: “I would be thrilled to see Iker win because he was terrific for us in winning La Liga last season and then for Spain in the European finals. But the truth is that you only have to look at the history of these awards to realise that they almost always go to outfield players.”
Raul himself has never been awarded the accolade, and only seven Real players have clinched the award so far.
