Primera Liga Weekend Preview

Primera Liga Weekend Preview

Barcelona's clinching of the Primera Division title last weekend means the focus turns to the battle to remain in the top flight.

Any of the clubs from 12th place downwards can suffer relegation with Osasuna, Numancia and Recreativo Huelva currently residing in the drop zone.

Osasuna, behind fourth bottom Sporting Gijon courtesy of an inferior head-to-head record, appear to have the trickiest task with a trip to Barca.

And although Pep Guardiola has already admitted he will rest several key players ahead of next Wednesday's Champions League final against Manchester United, Osasuna striker Walter Pandiani knows his side will be up against it.

He said: "We need to win these final two games by any means, regardless of what happens elsewhere.

"The Barca players will want to continue their party on the pitch. They're not going to give us anything, because it is a game in which those who don't normally play will want to prove themselves.

"You have to respect Barca more than anyone - they are the champions and the only reason the players don't play much is because they have the likes of (Lionel) Messi, (Thierry) Henry, (Andres) Iniesta or Xavi in front of them."

Pandiani is determined to help the Pamplona-based club survive, however, to repay the fans for their support.

"The fans have showed us that they believe in us. We want to win because it is only us who have made things difficult for ourselves," he added.

"Now the team have to stand up and be counted and no one can leave anything behind."

Recre will have their relegation confirmed if they lose at home to Racing Santander while Numancia visit a Getafe side a point above the bottom three and fighting for their lives.

Sporting go to Real Valladolid and Real Betis, whose hopes of staying up were boosted significantly by last weekend's 2-0 defeat of Almeria, take on surprise package Malaga.

Espanyol, the other side still in the mix despite their recent improvement, travel to Almeria.

The other major issue still unresolved in the Primera Division is which teams join Barca and Real Madrid in the Champions League next season.

Sevilla are five points clear of fifth-placed Valencia and virtually there. They meet seventh-placed Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday night with the visitors still hoping they can squeeze on to Europe's top table by winning their last two games.

Atletico Madrid, who leapt above Valencia and into fourth with a controversial 1-0 win over Los Che on Sunday, go to Athletic Bilbao while Villarreal host Valencia in a local derby with more than just bragging rights at stake.

The Yellow Submarine are two points adrift of Atletico with playmaker Ariel Ibagaza admitting the odds are now stacked against his side.

He said: "We have to do our job, which is to win, and see what happens on other pitches.

"It will be difficult for Atletico to shoot themselves in the foot, but our aim is to win.

"We hope to get the three points to end the season in front of our fans in the best way possible."

This weekend's fixtures are all slated for Saturday with the exception being Real Madrid's home clash with Real Mallorca, which will take place on Sunday.
