Recreativo Huelva vs Santander Preview

Recreativo Huelva must beat Racing Santander in the Primera Division Saturday night to have any realistic chance of avoiding relegation.

Recreativo dropped to the bottom of the table following last weekend's disappointing 1-0 defeat at Numancia and sit four points from safety with two games left.

And the Andalusians' hopes of survival now look slim even if they win their last two matches.

That scenario would see Lucas Alcaraz's side finish on 39 points, but they would also need other results to go their way.

To avoid relegation, Recreativo would need to overhaul three of the four clubs - those with less than 40 points - directly above them.

With two games left, Alcaraz's side can still overtake Numancia (35 points), Osasuna (37), Sporting Gijon (37) and Getafe (38).

With the exception of Getafe, Recre has a better head-to-head record in matches against their other rivals.

That means the Andalusians will finish above any of those sides if points are level at the end of the season.

Realistically, Recreativo must hope Osasuna and Sporting take nothing from either of their final two games, and that Numancia also fail to win both of their remaining matches.

Defeat at home to Racing will see Recreativo relegated this weekend, while a draw could also see the Andalusians return to the Second Division, depending on other results.

Whatever happens in the other games, Alcaraz says only two wins will be enough for his side.

"We need to win our last two games - that may or may not be enough but we have to keep our side of the bargain and get those six points," he said.

Aitor Tornavaca and Andres Lamas are suspended for the game against Racing, while Adrian Colunga and Javier Camunas are doubtful.

Racing have also had an inconsistent season, but are in a much healthier position with two games left.

The Cantabrians moved up to 12th place in the table following last weekend's 3-2 win at home to Valladolid.

Racing came from 2-1 behind to win that match, but were aided by the dismissal of Valladolid's Inaki Bea just after half-time.

That victory all but secured Primera Liga survival for the northerners, but the home fans nevertheless stayed behind to call for the sacking of coach Juan Ramon Lopez Muniz.

Lopez Muniz is now set to depart in the summer, but will almost certainly leave the club in the top flight.

For Racing to go down, the Cantabrians would have to lose both of their remaining games and drop six places, while Osasuna, Sporting Gijon and Getafe would all need to win their last two matches.

Racing host Getafe on the final day of the season, but are likely to be out of trouble by then, even if they lose tomorrow.

Midfielder Mehdi Lacen hopes his side can win their last two matches and secure a top-half finish.

"If we can finish in 10th place, it will have been a good season - we have to go Huelva to win the game," he said.

Juan Valera and Peter Luccin are both sidelined for the rest of the season and will not feature against Recre.
