Villarreal vs Valencia Preview

Villarreal and Valencia's Champions League dreams are on the line this weekend as the two east coast rivals go toe-to-toe.

Depending on what Atletico Madrid do in their match against Athletic Bilbao tomorrow night, Villarreal and Valencia each know that anything other than victory at El Madrigal could spell the end of their chances of claiming a top-four finish.

Atletico currently occupy the fourth and final Champions League spot on 61 points, two ahead of both Valencia and Villarreal with just two games remaining.

Villarreal striker Joseba Llorente admits that it is a match neither side can afford to drop points in, saying: "Only a win will be useful to us both and if we are drawing we will have to take risks in the final minutes.

"With regards to the other game (Athletic-Atletico), we have to have faith that Athletic will have the desire to finish as high as possible. I'm sure that in front of their fans they are going to go out to win and, as well as that, the teams from Madrid have never found it easy going up there.

"Their (Athletic) fans will not allow them to take it easy on the pitch."

Villarreal had their best-ever campaign last season when they finished runners-up behind champions Real Madrid, but Manuel Pellegrini's side have not been able to match that showing this season.

However, the Yellow Submarine still have a chance of ending on a high note and Llorente insists they are determined to do just that.

"We've reached the end of the season with a chance to get into the Champions League, we're alive and eager to win. We need to put the icing on the cake," he added.

"After so much effort and so many games we've come to this match with a chance of playing in Europe next season. If we can get back into the Champions League again then this season would get a 10 out of 10."

Valencia coach Unai Emery will be looking for an immediate response from his side following their disappointing, and potentially crucial, 1-0 defeat at Atletico last weekend.

A win in that match would have seen Los Che established in fourth place, but they barely created a single goalscoring chance in tumbling to defeat at the Vicente Calderon, and they have been left to play catch-up.

Now Valencia face another testing away match and Emery wants his players to stand up and be counted.

"Independent of what system we play, the important thing is our mentality, our faith and concentration," he said.

Pellegrini has named a 19-man squad for the local derby, with Spain duo Marcos Senna and Santi Cazorla still sidelined with injuries.

Valencia, meanwhile, will make the short trip north with a 22-man travelling party, with Emery including every available member of his senior squad.

Midfield trio David Silva, Manuel Fernandes and Vicente Rodriguez are the players absent through injury, while Portuguese international Hugo Viana is missing for personal reasons.
