Sevilla vs Deportivo Preview
Deportivo La Coruna's hopes of European football next season are still alive despite their setback against Getafe.
A home victory over relegation-threatened Getafe last weekend would have left Depor level on 59 points with Villarreal and Valencia, who occupy the two Europa League places, while fourth-placed Atletico Madrid would have been just two points in front.
However, it was to prove a frustrating match for in-form Depor - who had taken 13 points from their previous five matches - and they needed a late equaliser from veteran playmaker Juan Valeron just to salvage a 1-1 draw.
That draw could now prove costly as Depor's final two matches are against Sevilla and Barcelona, but goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia is adamant the dream lives on.
"Everywhere, when you win two successive games, you start looking up, and when you draw or lose, you start to be more pessimistic, but the objective is still not impossible, not at all," said the former Athletic Bilbao custodian, whose side played in the UEFA Cup this season.
"The European dream remains intact. We are going to have a chance until the last round of matches. We are in a position that nobody expected and this is helping us relax."
Aranzubia concedes it is not a straightforward path into the Europa League for his side though, adding: "We are in good form, but it's difficult. We are fighting against teams who are trying to get into the Champions League and for them the UEFA Cup (Europa League) would be a slight failure."
Like Depor, Sevilla are also still chasing a European dream this season, although they are considerably more advanced in their quest than Miguel Angel Lotina's side.
With just two games to go, third-placed Sevilla are currently five points ahead of Valencia (fifth) and Villarreal (sixth), and could guarantee themselves a Champions League berth this weekend.
Sevilla missed that opportunity last weekend after they were held to a goalless draw at lowly Osasuna, but coach Manolo Jimenez is hoping for better tomorrow.
"It's an important match but not decisive," said Jimenez, whose side will meet second-bottom Numancia in their final game of the season.
"We need to be calm, knowing that we could be smiling after this weekend's results and also that against Numancia we have another shot. But we want to finish our work and obtain our objective by winning this Saturday."
Tomorrow's match could see a surprise return to action for Sevilla striker Ernesto Chevanton.
The Uruguay international had been expected to miss the remainder of the season after undergoing a knee operation earlier this year, but he has recovered well enough to make Jimenez's 19-man squad to face Depor.
"It is clear that he is not at 100%, although physically he feels good," said Jimenez.
"His inclusion is a result of the desire he has shown, the good work he has done during the week and the injury problems we have up front."
