Real Madrid vs Mallorca Preview
Fallen champions Real Madrid will attempt to put off-field speculation to the back of their minds when they take on Real Mallorca.
Although neither Madrid or Mallorca have much to play for in terms of league placings, the home side will be keen to put on a show for their fans as they return to the Bernabeu for the first time since losing 6-2 to Barcelona.]
In their two games following that humiliation Madrid have suffered back-to-back defeats, and last weekend finally surrendered their Primera Division crown to Barca after going down 3-2 at Villarreal.
It has been a miserable few weeks for the club and defender Fabio Cannavaro knows it is important to give their supporters something to smile about tomorrow.
"It's important to win the game, both the team and the fans deserve it. It's essential to have a good farewell at the Bernabeu so that we all have a nice feeling after the game," said the Italian World Cup winner.
The match will be Cannavaro's final appearance at the Bernabeu as a Madrid player as he is returning to former club Juventus at the end of the season.
There is also a good chance that more Madrid players will be bidding farewell to the club in tomorrow's match as well - even if they don't know it yet.
With the club currently in the midst of a presidential election race, it seems certain that there will be a great deal of change at the Spanish giants this summer, especially if election favourite Florentino Perez, the architect of Madrid's famous 'galacticos' policy when he was previously at the helm from 2000 to 2006, returns to power.
There are already daily reports in the media about which players and coaches might be on their way to the Spanish capital this summer, and also speculation on which players might be on their way out.
Madrid coach Juande Ramos' future is also in doubt as his six-month contract runs out in June, but the former Sevilla boss is still demanding everyone give 100% over the last two games of the season, irrespective of what their futures may hold.
"When a team defends the Real Madrid shirt they have to do it until the end," said Ramos.
"It's true that the points now are not worth the same as at other times, but you need to win the game, be as serious as possible and defend the shirt without thinking of anything else."
Madrid, who are certain to finish in second spot, are without a host of players with Wesley Sneijder, Christoph Metzelder, Gabriel Heinze, Fernando Gago and Michel Salgado injured and Pepe suspended.
Also absent are Guti and third-choice goalkeeper Jordi Codina, who have been omitted by Ramos, but there is a place for Real Madrid Castilla defender Javi Velayos.
Like Madrid, ninth-placed Mallorca have little to play for but pride as they are safe from relegation and unable to get into the European places.
Nevertheless, Mallorca coach Gregorio Manzano believes both teams will still be looking to give their best tomorrow.
"Mallorca will give this match the importance it deserves. You can never play in the Bernabeu with your guard down, due to their quality, the pressure and tension that comes with playing there, and the fact it is the official season farewell for Real Madrid at home," said Manzano, whose side beat Barcelona last weekend.
Regarding Madrid, he added: "I don't think they will want to be embarrassed at home in their last match.
"Madrid will go out at 100% and I would not like us to be embarrassed in our last game away from home. We will go out and give everything and continue the goals we've set ourselves."
Manzano is without four players for the trip to the capital with Dudu Aouate, Jose Carlos Nunes, Lionel Scaloni and Jose Luis Marti all missing due to fitness concerns.
