Di Stefano wants Real to return to the top

Alfredo di Stefano wants new Real president Florentino Perez to take the club back to the glory days.

The Real Madrid honorary president greeted Florentino Perez upon his return to the Bernabeu this afternoon, and stated that the current objective is to ‘restore hope' to the club's supporters that a period of success lies ahead.

He said, "I wanted to congratulate Florentino [Perez]. The first thing we need to do is try to regain the illusion that the team can live up to what has always been true."

Di Stefano and Perez have always maintained a positive relationship, particularly during the latter's first spell in charge, when he named the club's sports academy after one of its most famous ever players.

The 82-year old remains grateful for this honour, and added that the target for Madrid now is to return to its rightful position at the pinnacle of the world's elite sides.

He added, "Florentino must ensure that the club is at the head of World football. There are many things to fix and we must make sure that the public enjoy watching the team again."

One of Perez's first decisions was to confirm the appointment of Manuel Pellegrini as head coach on a two-year contract.
