Ronaldo has taste for trophies

Cristiano Ronaldo believes he was fated to join Real Madrid and is determined to continue winning trophies.

The Portugal winger was paraded before around 80,000 Madrid fans at the Bernabeu last night after completing his blockbuster £80million transfer from Manchester United, and in doing so became the second galactico brought to the club by president Florentino Perez following the arrival of Kaka.

The tag of the world's most expensive player is hanging comfortably around the neck of the 24-year-old, who claimed at the weekend the fee was a "fair" price for a man of his talents, and he insists his union with Madrid was destined to happen some day.

"I've always spoken of the respect I have for this club," he told Madrid's official website, www.realmadrid.com.

"I think I had to end up here after everything that's happened. The president has worked very hard to get me here and I am very grateful to him.

"He is a very intelligent person and I think he's doing what's best for the club. He has signed several of the best players in the world and I believe we are going to have a great team."

Perez's summer spending frenzy has taken transfer fees in the game to another level.

The club have spent almost £200million already on just four new signings - Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Raul Albiol - and more big-name arrivals are believed to be in the pipeline as well.

Ronaldo may be the reigning world player of the year, but even he believes he can learn much from his new team-mates in the Spanish capital.

"I think I'm starting from zero," he admitted.

"Manchester is Manchester and I now I'm at Madrid I need to do the nice things that I did at Manchester. I want to win the same things, or more, if it is possible."

A Champions League winner's medal and three Premier League titles were among a bumper haul of silverware accumulated by Ronaldo during his time at Old Trafford, and the forward sees no reason for the gongs and accolades to suddenly dry up now.

"I am 24 years old and I have won important titles, but I want to keep improving throughout my career," he said. "This team has many players one can learn from.

"My intention is to do the same things I did at Manchester United and to maintain or increase my ambitions.

"I have enough faith in myself, in the team, in the president and in the coach [Manuel Pellegrini]. I think we can achieve great things."

Ronaldo admits, however, he will be confronted with a very different football culture in the Primera Division, a competition he believes offers a "special" brand of football.

"The English Premier League is a very tough league, physically you have to be strong, you have to be fast because the football is too quick there," he added in an interview with Real Madrid TV.

"I think it is different [in Spain]. The small teams have the quality to play as well, they are not scared to play. I think it is special football here in La Liga.

"I hope to do what I did in Manchester, I'm going to work on that and I'm very confident."

He talked down suggestions he will single-handedly lead Madrid to European glory next season, however.

Madrid have been crowned champions of Europe a record nine times but have badly underachieved recently, falling at the last-16 stage in each of the last five years.

Those failures have wounded Madrid and claiming that elusive 10th European crown has turned into something of a Holy Grail for the Spanish giants, especially with next summer's final being held at their Bernabeu home.

Ronaldo preferred not to see himself as the club's sole saviour in their European quest, though, saying: "I'm not the only one that plays.

"In the games there are many players. I will be part of the team and I will give my best to win the Champions League.

"We have a great team and a great coach. We are going to take it step by step, taking it calmly, and then we can think about winning the Champions League. We have a decent chance but we need to take it slow and work hard."
