Fabregas is Barca back-up

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has revealed Cesc Fabregas is a target for the Catalans - if they can't get Franck Ribery.

The Arsenal captain has been continually linked with a move back to his native Spain - with both Real Madrid and Barcelona among his known admirers.

And with Bayern Munich adamant that they will not sell France international Ribery at any price it seems that Barca may firm up their interest in the gifted Fabregas.

Speaking to Spanish television, Laporta confirmed that Barca are in the market to strengthen and outlined his main targets: "Ribery was a player we were interested in at a logical price but Bayern don't want to sell.

"If they are interested in selling, we are interested in buying but if not, then we will look to Fabregas.

"Compared to him there is no available alternative left in the market, so we will see what happens.

"But after last season we only need small adjustments - a left-back, a central defender, a midfielder and a forward."

Fabregas has denied all rumours of wanting to leave the Gunners, saying he is happy at the Emirates, but a formal bid from Barcelona could tempt both player and club in light of Arsenal's recent failure to challenge for silverware and the tight financial situation that the London club is in following the redevelopment of it's home ground.
