Primera Liga Sunday Review

Valencia made it two wins out of two to start the Primera Liga season as David Villa ripped apart Valladolid's defence in a 4-2 win.

Villa nabbed a brace and could have had many more as Valencia's attacking options overwhelmed their hosts.

David Silva and Juan Mata got the other Valencia goals, rendering meaningless strikes from Nauzet Aleman and Manucho.

Athletic Bilbao also have maximum points as a David Prieto own goal in the 32nd minute saw them triumph 1-0 at Xerez.

Jesus Mendoza was sent off three minutes from time to complete a miserable night for the newly-promoted side who have no points from the opening two fixtures.

Tenerife, who also came up from the segunda division, recorded their first top flight points since 2002 with a 2-1 win over nine-man Osasuna.

After a goalless first half, all the noteworthy incidents took place after the break with goals from Tenerife duo Nino and Ricardo Leon sandwiching an effort from Walter Pandiani to earn the Canary Islands side the victory.

Osasuna's cause was not helped by the loss of two players to red cards though, with Nacho Monreal and Javad Nekounam being dismissed in the 47th and 73rd minutes, respectively.

Sporting Gijon and Deportivo La Coruna also picked up their first points of the season as they both triumphed 1-0 against Almeria and Malaga respectively.

Sporting had the best of the possession and chances against an Almeria side struggling for goals, and Diego Castro's fifth-minute strike proved enough as the visitors struggled in attack.

Filipe Luis struck a terrific goal nine minutes from time to give Depor a hard-fought win over Malaga, rifling home a thunderous drive from 25 yards.

Elsewhere, Villarreal were held to their second successive 1-1 draw after failing to see off Real Mallorca at a rain-drenched El Madrigal.

Villarreal took the lead through Giuseppe Rossi in the 54th minute, but could not hold on, with Borja Valero equalising 15 minutes from time for the Balearic Island outfit.
