Barcelona have confirmed Lionel Messi will sign his new contract with the club, making him the highest paid player at Nou Camp.

President Joan Laporta said: "He's the best player in the world and one of the best in soccer history, he's content (here at Barca) and that's why he's playing the way he is."

The 22-year-old Argentina had signed a deal in late 2005, contracting him to Barcelona until 2014, Messi's new contract takes him up to 2016.

Messi will reportedly receive wages of 190,000 euros a week and will overtake Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the club's highest earner.
