Benzema gives reasons for Lyon exit

Karim Benzema has cited a lack of understanding with Lyon coach Claude Puel as one of his reasons for his departure.

The Frenchman, who snubbed Manchester United to join Real Madrid last summer, has also cited the lack of competition as one of the reasons.

Previously, Benzema had wanted to stay with Lyon until after the World Cup, but eventually signed with Real in the summer.

"I wanted to do one more year in Lyon, but I had no comfort. It was the right choice," Benzema told RMC radio.

"I did not get along very well with the coach (Claude Puel). Lyon has taught me everything, but I had no competition there. So sometimes I did not train very well, because I knew I would play the weekend.

"It's different here, I must work hard, even in training."
