Lotina: Don’t change the laws!
Deportivo La Coruna coach Miguel Angel Lotina has publicly endorsed the LFP’s criticism of the Spanish government’s desire to change tax laws.
The current taxation rate of foreigners earning an annual salary of over €600,000-per-annum may be raised from 24 per cent to 43 per cent if the new laws are implemented, something that football clubs are desperate to prevent from happening.
"If the Spanish league wants to have players like [Lionel] Messi or Kaka, this rule, which makes it easier for high-profile foreigners to come here, must be kept in place," he reasoned to Sport.
"[Changing the laws] would be a massive blow to Spanish football. There is currently an advantage to sign the big names and this would be lost."
Lotina also insists that any adjustments would put clubs under severe financial stress due to the increased amounts in football contracts.
"When players are negotiating a contract, they talk about receiving net amounts, so the club will be the one who pays the difference between 24 per cent and 43 per cent," he said.
The plans for taxation changes have caused a stir in Spanish football, and the LFP have stated that they could stage a protest if the laws are passed.
