Valencia and Spain striker David Villa has declared Lionel Messi the best player in the world.

Spain beat Argentina 2-1 in a friendly match at the Vicente Calderon last night, with Messi scoring the South American's goal from the penalty spot, and Villa was quick to underline the quality of the 22-year-old from Rosario.

Messi has endured criticism in Argentina for his performances during World Cup qualification but Villa believes that it would be difficult for any player to give a good account of themselves when their team is not fairing well.

Speaking to Sport he commented "When things don't go well at group level, it's hard for anyone to stand out individually, but Messi is the best in the world for everyone.

"While we can complicate things, I have no doubt that Messi will have a great World Cup."

Spain breezed through World Cup qualification and will be one of the favourites in South Africa next year, as will Diego Maradona's side depite their unconvincing qualification.
