Philipp Lahm has emerged as a surprise January target of reigning European and Spanish champions Barcelona.

The Bayern Munich full-back fits Barca's needs as they are looking for cover on the right side of their defence.

Presently, Daniel Alves is their first-choice right-back with Carles Puyol deputising whenever the Brazilian is not available for selection.

According to reports from Germany, the 26-year-old German is known to prefer operating on the right but has spent much of his career for club and country playing at left-back.

Lahm, who has indicated his desire to leave Bayern, will be a perfect buy for Barcelona.

The 26-year-old's future at Bayern is also in doubt after he was fined for publicly critising the club.

He is also believed to have other suitors in Manchester United and Juventus and it is expected that a price in the region of €16 million would be needed to secure his services.
