Pellegrini: Raul is still key player
Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini has refuted suggestions that Raul is no longer a vital member of the team.
Pellegrini was quick to praise the club icon - saying that he still has an important role to play for los Blancos even if he has not featured on such a regular basis this season.
Speaking to AS the coach commented "There are different reasons for not playing - for lack of performance or because others are doing well.
"Raul is a very important player through his attitude - he is in the right condition and at the level of those who are playing, and will surely regain his place in some of the upcoming games."
He also took aim at the forward's critics, stressing that he could still be relied upon in any game despite his age.
"They are trying to retire a player who demonstrates his ability in every match," he stated tersely.
Raul was a second half substitute for Real in their 1-0 victory over Racing Santander last night, a result that took them to the top of La Liga after Barcelona were held to a draw at Athletic Bilbao.
All eyes will turn to the Camp Nou next weekend when the big two clash in the latest edition of El Clasico.
