Pellegrini: We lack creativity
Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini admits to being concerned about the style of football his side are currently producing.
Madrid's 1-0 victory over FC Zurich saw them go two points clear at the top of their Champions League group and they only need a draw or narrow defeat in their final game away to Marseille to secure a place in the last 16.
The Spanish giants also climbed to the summit of the Primera Division this week after downing Racing Santander 1-0 at home last Saturday to go a point clear of Barcelona ahead of this Sunday's showdown between the two at the Nou Camp.
Statistically Madrid look to be in fine fettle, with their win over Zurich meaning they have now won five of six matches whilst drawing the other since a blip in form saw them lose three in five, including that humiliating 4-0 Copa del Rey loss to Alcorcon.
However, it is not all plain sailing at the Bernabeu, with the team failing to deliver the kind of entertainment or performances expected of them following their 250million euro summer outlay on new players.
"We are concerned because this isn't how we want to play. It's not the type of play that I as coach like," said Pellegrini, whose side's last three matches - at home to Alcorcon, Racing and Zurich - each finished in limp 1-0 wins.
"We are looking very good defensively, but we lack creativity, movement and a little fortune, because here (against Zurich) we had opportunities and didn't convert them.
"It's very probable that there is an excess of anxiety, of pressure, due to the criticism we've received and because some aspects of our play aren't working. The team deserves a lot of credit for being where they are. We aren't playing badly, but we aren't playing entertaining football either."
One reason for Madrid's indifferent performances has been the loss of world-record signing Cristiano Ronaldo.
Madrid had won their opening seven games this season with Ronaldo in the side, scoring 24 times in the process - of which the former Manchester United man contributed nine.
Since the £80million man suffered an ankle injury in the Champions League win over Marseille on September 30, Madrid have not been anywhere near as convincing, but the Portugal international made his return to action against Zurich as a second-half substitute.
Pellegrini added: "These minutes will be very good for Ronaldo. He's looked fine in training, and he'd gotten rid of his mental concern about his injury. We all know what Cristiano contributes where he plays."
