Jimenez: Barca tie not over yet
Manolo Jimenez has warned Sevilla not to take things for granted after his side beat Barcelona 2-1 in the first leg of their Copa del Rey last 16.
Despite being badly hit by absentees that left them with only 14 senior players for the trip to Barca, Sevilla upset the cup holders at Nou Camp and now need to just avoid defeat in next week's second leg to progress through to the quarter-finals.
Jimenez is taking nothing for granted, though.
"We've got through the first round, but another one remains," said the coach.
"We're playing against the best team in the world and although things are now better than they were before the start, nothing is decided.
"Right now the tie is tilted in our favour, but against Barcelona you can never relax because they have so much quality."
Barca coach Pep Guardiola opted to radically change his starting line-up for last night's match compared to the side which met Villarreal at the weekend.
Regular first-teamers Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Xavi, Carles Puyol, Thierry Henry, Victor Valdes and Gerard Pique all started on the bench, but nevertheless Guardiola was still able to select a team packed with internationals.
And while Jimenez understands why Guardiola did what he did, he insists the fact it was a weakened Barca side should not detract from his side's victory, as Sevilla were also missing Frederic Kanoute, Luis Fabiano, Didier Zokora, Sergio Sanchez, Federico Fazio, Lautaro Acosta, Javi Varas, Tom de Mul, Adriano and Sebastien Squillaci for various reasons.
"Barcelona will be incapable of maintaining the same high tempo in all three competitions, they will have to utilise many players, but aside from Thiago, the team they put out against us was full of well-known players," Jimenez said.
"The unfortunate thing is not being able to leave out players to give them a break, the unfortunate thing is to not be able to count on players through injury."
