La Liga Team of the Week 10
Kelvin Leong purrs about another wonderkid in his La Liga Team of the Week in the form of 18-year-old Sergio Canales.
Jordi Codina - Getafe
Codina let in the winning goal against Sporting Gijon but if not for him, the hosts would have had a handsome home win with goals aplenty. Save after save, Codina denied Gijon from extending their lead.
Carlos Puyol - Barcelona
Yes, Barca were playing league minnows Tenerife but to have come away with a cleansheet and five goals said a lot about Puyol's leadership at the back. The Catalan captain has been one of the key reasons for Barca's rampant form last season and he is showing no signs of slowing down.
Alvaro Arbeloa - Real Madrid
Arbeloa's move from Liverpool was a low key affair with Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo stealing the limelight but the Spanish right-back has started to come into his own, delivering some excellent shifts down the wing in support of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Carlos Marchena - Valencia
The evergreen veteran was clean in the tackle and commanding at the back. Covered the defence well while also providing the third goal to finish off a stubborn Xerez side. Marchena is still proving to be a reliable player that could be a good squad player for Spain at the World Cup.
Antonio Nunes - Mallorca
Nunes may have been on the losing side but his solid display at the back helped keep Madrid to just two goals when it could have been more. He was also a threat when he went forward and should be proud of handling Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo well at the Bernabeu.
Guardado - Deportivo La Coruna
The Mexican midfielder could be on his way to a bigger club if he continues his rich vein of form. A nightmare for Osasuna's defenders who could not cope with his speed and creativity. Provided the assist for Juan Rodriguez to slam the ball home.
Esteban Granero - Real Madrid
Granero is one of the lesser names in a star-studded Los Merengues midfield but his contribution was one of the most valuable against Mallorca. Coming on for the injured Rafael van Der Vaart, Granero dictated the pace of the game from the middle and found the back of the net to give Madrid some breathing space.
Jose Antonio Reyes - Atletico Madrid
The former Arsenal and Sevilla winger ensured Atletico went home with three points and was a constant thorn down the wings against Valladolid. He capped a fine outing with the third goal which killed off any chance of a comeback from the home team.
Juan Mata - Valencia
David Silva has been Valencia's best winger in the last two seasons but Juan Mata has stepped up to the plate and shown that he is just as good. A dazzling dribbler with a good eye for goal, Mata could well be Spain's surprise weapon in South Africa come June.
Lionel Messi - Barcelona
The Argentine wizard destroyed Tenerife with a wonderful hat-trick which showed why he was the best footballer on the planet in 2009. If Barca are to have as spectacular season as the one before, Messi will need to continue delivering his man-of-the-match performances.
Sergio Canales - Racing Santander
The 18-year-old was in stunning form against Sevilla with two lovely goals that put the hosts to the sword. His first goal was a classy finish which was replica of the Brazilian Ronaldo when he played for Real Madrid. One look at the goalkeeper and the ball was elegantly chipped into goal. Nice!
