Copa del Rey Wednesday Review
Barcelona were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Sevilla despite winning their second leg of their last-16 tie 1-0.
Spain international Xavi struck the only goal of the game in the 64th minute but that was not enough to prevent Pep Guardiola's side from going out on the away goals rule after losing the first leg 2-1 at home.
Following a goalless first half, Barca laid siege to the Sevilla goal after the break and home goalkeeper Andres Palop needed to produce fine saves to deny Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry in quick succession.
Palop could do nothing about the goal that gave Barca a lifeline though, Xavi firing a low shot into the corner of the net from the edge of the box.
Barca continued to push forward after that and Messi missed with only Palop to beat before the Argentinian curled a shot against the far post.
The Catalan giants, whose Copa del Rey success last season was the first of a record-breaking six trophies, would not come any closer than that and when Palop produced another brilliant stop from Messi late on Guardiola's side must have known it was not going to be their night.
Sevilla will next meet Deportivo La Coruna, who dumped out 2008 winners Valencia 4-3 on aggregate following a thrilling second leg at the Riazor.
Depor had won the first meeting 2-1 but they looked in some trouble as they fell 2-0 behind tonight after just 30 minutes when giant Valencia striker Nikola Zigic twice headed in right-wing crosses from Miguel.
However, a mistake by Miguel allowed opposing full-back Filipe Luis to pull a goal back for Depor just after half-time and level the scores up on aggregate.
Then in the 71st minute more good work from Filipe Luis led to Juan Rodriguez making it 2-2 on the night.
Both sides had chances to win the game in the closing stages as the match swept from one end to the other, but the scoreline remained unchanged and it was Depor who were able to celebrate at the end.
Alcorcon's participation in the tournament came to an end after they played out a goalless draw at Racing Santander tonight to tumble out 3-2 on aggregate.
Alcorcon, who play in the third tier of Spanish football, caused a huge upset in the previous round when they humiliated mighty Real Madrid 4-1 on aggregate.
Segunda Division leaders Hercules also waved goodbye to the cup tonight on away goals after going down 1-0 to Osasuna.
The Primera Division side had lost the first leg 2-1 but Masoud Shojaei's goal just after half-time sent them through to the last eight, where they will meet Racing.
Getafe, runners-up in 2007 and 2008, progressed through after a 5-1 home mauling of Malaga tonight earned them a 6-3 aggregate win over their top-flight rivals.
Roberto Soldado (2), Rafa Lopez, Pedro Leon and Dani Parejo netted Getafe's goals and they will now face either Real Mallorca or Rayo Vallecano. Those two sides meet tomorrow night with hosts Mallorca trailing 2-1 from the first meeting.
Celta Vigo, who knocked out Villarreal last night, will meet the winner of tomorrow's other match between Atletico Madrid and Recreativo Huelva. Recre lead that match 3-0.
