La Liga approve Monday match days

La Liga matches will now be played on Mondays after the Spanish football league ratified an agreement with the federation.

One match a weekend will take place on Monday night, starting almost immediately with the first game scheduled for February 15.

The decision, which will also see second-division games played on Fridays, was passed by a majority vote at an extraordinary general meeting this morning.

A statement on the league's website read: "The LFP's Extraordinary General Assembly which met this morning, ratified by a majority vote the co-ordination agreement proposed in conjunction with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) on January 26.

"The agreement, which will last until 2014 but with the possibility of an extension until 2018, establishes the viability of staging Liga BBVA and Liga Adelante matches on Mondays and Fridays, from this season, except those which clash with matches for Spain's senior and Under-21 sides."
