La Liga Team of the Week 14
Kelvin Leong salutes the Atletico Madrid stars who put a dent into Barcelona's title ambitions in his La Liga Team of the Week.
David De Gea - Atletico Madrid
De Gea's outstanding performance against Barcelona was the perfect showreel for his many suitors who would have been stunned by the boy's ability to pull off amazing saves and keep his cool as one of the club football's best attacking units came charging down at him.
Alvaro Arbeloa - Real Madrid
The former Liverpool man played his best game in a Madrid shirt against Xerez at the weekend. Took his goal well but it was his wonderful overlapping runs that was a sight to behold. If Arbeloa can continue his fine form, the right-back slot for Spain at the World Cup will be the perfect gift at the end of the season.
Weligton - Malaga
The veteran Brazilian defender kept things simple at the back and sent Malaga on the way with the opening goal as his side romped to a 3-0 away win over Racing Santander on Sunday.
Alvaro Dominguez - Atletico Madrid
Dominguez's prominent rise has been one of the key catalyst for Atletico's solid displays in recent weeks at the back. Proving to be invaluable to the team despite his young age.
Joan Capdevilla - Villarreal
Capedevilla could probably double-up as a striker if his team needed one. The Villarreal defender has been a rock at the back this season but its his goalscoring ability that has caught the eye this term. Another fine goal to cap off a good outing. Its starting to become a habit isn't it.
Diego Castro - Sporting Gijon
Castro has been in good form this season and has been one of the few bright sparks for the Gijon outfit. His early goal rattled Valencia and he continued to trouble the visitors with his industrious running.
Javi Marquez - Espanyol
The all-action midfielder proved a tough nut to crack as he put a blanket in front of his back four to shield them from Deportivo's attackers while also providing an alternative when his team went on the offensive.
Jose Antonio Reyes - Atletico Madrid
Simao Sabrosa and Diego Forlan scored the crucial goals to bring down league leaders Barcelona but it was the former Arsenal winger's superb wing play that threw the Catalan defence into mayhem. Reyes was absolutely flawless on the night.
Fernando Soriano - Almeria
Soriano is better known for his no-nonsense approach to the game but it was his injury-time equaliser that gave Almeria a point at the death against Getafe.
Luis Fabiano - Sevilla
The Brazilian hitman is hitting form just in time for the World Cup and his brilliant header gave Sevilla a slim 1-0 win over visitors Osasuna.
Cristiano Ronaldo - Real Madrid
Love him or hate him, the Portuguese Peacock is one of the most exciting footballers on the planet. His brace against Xerez on Saturday gave Real Madrid real belief that they can go on to wrestle the La Liga title away from Barcelona.
