Atletico Madrid vs Osasuna Preview

Osasuna will look to continue their recent dominance over Atletico Madrid tomorrow night and leap-frog over the inconsistent Rojiblancos in the Primera Division standings.

Both clubs are currently locked on 31 points, with 11th-placed Atletico just ahead of Osasuna thanks to a marginally better goal difference.

However, Osasuna will fancy their chances of climbing above Atletico having taken 10 points out of 12 in their last four meetings with the capital club, scoring 10 goals and conceding just three in the process.

Last season they recorded a 4-2 win at the Vicente Calderon, and winger Juanfran Torres is hoping for more of the same tomorrow night.

"We played a great game. Hopefully we can repeat that result, but to do that we need to work hard and run more than them from the first minute," said Juanfran.

Osasuna have picked up just two points from their last four games, but they still boast a healthy 11-point gap to the relegation places, which is a rare luxury for the Pamplona-based side in recent years.

They have finished just one point above the drop zone in the last two seasons, and last year`s escape was a miraculous one as they picked up seven points from their final three games against top trio Barcelona, Real Madrid and Sevilla.

"The team is good and the feelings are good. We are in a comfortable situation and this has given us peace of mind after two years of suffering," added Juanfran.

The former Real Madrid youngster also believes his side have been in better form over the last four games than the results suggest, adding: "We are playing well. If we play like we have in the last few weeks, the goals are going to come and we aren`t worried."

Juanfran knows it would be wrong to get too carried away ahead of tomorrow`s match however, despite his side`s good recent record against Atletico.

He said of Quique Sanchez Flores` men: "They have a great team and we have a lot of respect for the players they have and the form they`ve been in over the last few months. They are harder to beat now than before."

Atletico, as they have for most of the season, continue to be mercurial, mixing good performance one week with indifferent ones the next.

Two weeks ago they beat Turkish giants Galatasaray 2-1 in Istanbul to progress through to the last 16 of the Europa League, and they followed that up with an impressive 4-1 mauling of Valencia in La Liga.

However, they then needed an injury-time equaliser to salvage a 1-1 draw against lowly Real Zaragoza before last Thursday being held 0-0 at home by a Sporting Lisbon side that played almost an hour with a man less and the last few minutes with two men less.

Atletico are 10 points off the top six but young goalkeeper David De Gea is not giving up the fight, saying: "We know it`s difficult to get into the European places, but playing consistently we can do it.

"Soon we will be facing teams above us and if we do things well, in a month we can be closer to our objective."

After the visit of Osasuna, Atletico face top seven sides Real Mallorca, Athletic Bilbao, Real Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna in successive league games.
