Pellegrini pleased with Real response

Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini is happy with how his team responded after their Champions League exit by beating Real Valladolid 4-1.

A trademark free-kick from Cristiano Ronaldo and a Gonzalo Higuain hat-trick gave Real their eighth straight league win and maintained top spot in La Liga on goal difference.

"I'm happy with how the team responded but there are many shortcomings to be corrected but we are increasing our football and scoring ability," Pellegrini said at the post match press conference.

"We now have seven or eight wins scoring more than three goals. Today we scored four in a venue that in the past had not been favourable."

The Chilean was also quick to defend under fire striker Higuain who has received criticism for not scoring in their Champions League defeat to Lyon.

"He was concerned during the week but has a great character. He is unfairly accused of missing a goal and of selfish behavior. He has had the same feeling as anyone. We are all hurt," noted Pellegrini.
