Arbeloa: Barca deserve it

Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa does not want to see Barcelona in the Champions League final which will be played at the Bernabeu.

This season's Champions League final will take place at the Bernabeu and the Los Merengues were hoping to appear in the final in their own backyard but were ousted from the competition by Lyon.

Their league rivals Barca on the other hand managed to cruise through to seal their spot in the quarter-finals by demolishing German giants Stuttgart on Tuesday night and are on their way to defending their European title.

Speaking to the Marca, Arbeloa said: "It would cause me pain to see Barcelona play the Champions League final in the Bernabeu. If it happens, it will remind us that we were not capable of accomplishing such an important goal and they were.

"I am not envious of them [Barca]; I am very happy to be at Real Madrid and I would not change my place for any player at Barcelona. If they are in the quarter-finals, it is because they deserve it and we do not."

As for his club's league title hopes, Arbeloa knows that it will take a huge effort to dethrone the reigning champions.

He added: "We are talking about one of the best teams in history. They are playing very well and one needs to recognise that. For us, it will be very difficult to win La Liga against this team, but this motivates us more."

Madrid take on Sporting Gijon this weekend and will hope to secure maximum points to stay ahead of Pep Guardiola's rampant Barca outfit.
