Mallorca 4-1 Atletico Madrid

Mallorca 4-1 Atletico Madrid

Mallorca continued their sensational home form as they thrashed Atletico Madrid to climb into the top four of La Liga.

Victor Casadesus set the islanders on their way with the opener after just 10 minutes and although Diego Forlan hit back for the visitors halfway through the first period, that was as good as things got for Quique Sanchez Flores' side.

Aritz Aduriz restored Mallorca's lead moments later and there was only ever likely to be one winner after Raul Garcia was sent off 10 minutes into the second half.

And after Forlan had missed a good opportunity to equalise late on, Atletico defender Luis Perea gifted the home side the three points when he turned into his own net with just five minutes left.

Mallorca then round off a resounding victory with a fourth goal in the last minute, scored in some style by Felipe Mattioni.

Atletico advanced to the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Thursday night following a creditable 2-2 draw away to Sporting Lisbon.

But that effort looked to have taken a lot out of Sanchez Flores' men and they were second best in the early stages.

And they were half asleep as Mallorca took the lead after 10 minutes.

Forlan blocked Victor's initial shot following a corner that the visitors had failed to clear, but the striker smashed home at the second time of asking to give the islanders the perfect start.

Victor then came close to a second two minutes later, but Atletico keeper David De Gea made a fine save.

De Gea saved spectacularly from Victor once again after 20 minutes and made a neat stop to deny Mattioni moments later.

It was all Mallorca at this stage, but Atletico levelled against the run of play five minutes later, when Forlan latched onto a Jose Manuel Jurado pass to slot past Dudu Aouate.

The visitors' joy was short-lived, however, as Mallorca retook the lead virtually straight away, when Perea allowed Aduriz all the time in the world to first set up Gonzalo Castro and then head the return ball into the net from close-range.

Forlan missed a decent opportunity at the other end after that, but Atletico were way off the pace overall and things got even worse after 55 minutes, when Raul Garcia was dismissed for a cynical tackle which brought a second yellow card.

Despite their numerical advantage, Mallorca created little after that, and Forlan again squandered a good chance to level when he blasted over with 12 minutes left.

It was all over after 85 minutes, though, when Perea clumsily hacked the ball into his own net following a corner.

Mattioni then gave the scoreline a completely one-sided look as he crashed an impressive volley into the corner in the last minute.

The win - Mallorca's 12th from 13 games at home in the league this season - sees the islanders move up to fourth, two points clear of Sevilla, who went down 2-0 at Espanyol yesterday.

Atletico, meanwhile, drop to 11th and will surely concentrate on their cup campaigns now.

Sanchez Flores' side face Sevilla in the final of the Copa del Rey later this season and were paired with Valencia in the Europa League quarter-finals on Friday.
