Osasuna 1-3 Racing Santander

Osasuna 1-3 Racing Santander

Racing Santander brought their recent goal drought to an end with an impressive win at Osasuna.

Since crashing out to Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey last month, Racing had failed to score in five matches.

But the Cantabrians had their shooting boots on in Pamplona, despite going a goal down in the first half.

Miguel Flano gave Osasuna the lead after 32 minutes, but Racing levelled proceedings through Gonzalo Colsa almost straight away and secured a deserved victory following second-half strikes from Christian Fernandez and Papakouli Diop.

Osasuna began the day safely installed in mid-table, four points better off than Racing.

Miguel Angel Portugal's side were just three points clear of the drop zone prior to this one and badly needed to rediscover the form they showed when the coach returned to the club late last year.

Young prodigy Sergio Canales signalled their intentions early on, but his free-kick sailed inches wide after just three minutes.

Osasuna, missing first-choice strikers Walter Pandiani and Carlos Aranda, took a while to get going, but wasted a good chance to take the lead after a quarter of an hour, when Masoud Shojaei shot straight at Racing keeper Fabio Coltorti from a great position.

But Masoud was involved as Osasuna went in front shortly after the half hour mark.

The Iran midfielder teed up Juanfran Torres, whose precise cross was met with a vengeance by Flano's header, which gave Coltorti no chance.

It looked an all too similar story for Racing, but the Cantabrians levelled within two minutes, when Colsa lashed home an unstoppable drive from outside the area after he was teed up by Canales.

Coltorti then did well to get a hand to Masoud's venomous cross as Osasuna looked to restore their advantage.

But Racing were on the ascendancy as the second half got underway and duly took the lead after 51 minutes, when Christian headed Pedro's Munitis' free-kick back across goal and into the far corner.

Both sides had good chances after that in an evenly-balanced second period.

Javier Camunas and Javad Nekounam both saw efforts saved by Coltorti, while Ricardo did well to deny Munitis at the other end.

And the veteran Racing forward was guilty of a glaring miss with six minutes left, when he shot wide with only Ricardo to beat.

The former Real Madrid striker was almost left to rue that miss as Juanfran threatened at the other end, but Coltorti made a fine save and Racing sealed the points as Diop fired home the clincher from close-range in the closing stages.

Still Osasuna had chances after that, but it was too little, too late, and there was no way back for Jose Antonio Camacho's side.

Despite their defeat, the Navarrans lie in 13th, eight points clear of the drop zone, while Racing, with one less, remain in 16th.
