Deportivo 0-0 Real Zaragoza

Deportivo La Coruna and Real Zaragoza played out a 0-0 draw at the Riazor in their opening match of the new Primera Division season.

Zaragoza, who avoided an immediate return to the Segunda Division last season after staging a fine recovery in the second half of the campaign, started the better of the two sides and summer signing Marco Perez had the first sight of goal in the 10th minute.

However, after breaking free of the Depor defence the teenage striker saw his well-struck shot parried by Manu Fernandez.

Another of Zaragoza's pre-season recruits, veteran goalkeeper Leo Franco, then found himself in the action as he dived to his left to push away Andres Guardado's shot from the edge of the box in the 24th minute.

Neither side was able to create much more than those opportunities in a low-key first half though, and it was not until 10 minutes into the second period that either goal was seriously threatened again.

On that occasion it was Zaragoza playmaker Ander Herrera who went close, the 21-year-old drilling a left-footed shot just wide of the far post from just outside the area.

Arguably the clearest chance of the encounter fell to Zaragoza's Jorge Lopez on the hour mark, but the much-travelled forward spurned the opening.

Nicolas Bertolo did superbly down the left to beat his man before pulling the ball back to an unmarked Lopez on the penalty spot. But the former Villarreal, Valencia and Racing Santander man mis-controlled the pass and although he managed to swivel and get a shot in, Fernandez was able to block.

Depor created a couple of half-chances late on but substitute Riki and Guardado could not take advantage as the game finished goalless.
