Koeman hits back after Valencia exit

Ronald Koeman has delivered a stinging attack on Voro Gonzalez, the man who succeeded him at Valencia.

Voro led the club to safety with four wins in his five matches in charge after recalling veteran goalkeeper Santiago Canizares but Koemen claims that just prior to his sacking last month Voro advised him against playing the stopper.

"First-choice goalkeeper (Timo) Hildebrand was injured, so I told my goalkeeping coach that I wanted to start with Canizares, and that I didn't have a personal feud with him," Koeman told Dutch television station het Gesprek. "Voro then told me that Canizares had a very bad name within the rest of the squad and that I should not put him in the line-up. So I started with our third-choice goalkeeper, who wasn't up to the job."

He added: "And what do I see after my departure? Canizares starts. That makes you glad you (are out of it). The football world has become much more dishonest in the last 10 years."

Koeman added that problems within the squad grew because the likes of David Albelda and Miguel Angel Angulo were allowed to train with the first team even after Koeman had made it clear that he did not want them in the team.

"It was disastrous that the players who I didn't use anymore just trained with the rest of the squad and were in the dressing room," he said. "They sickened the atmosphere, and found support in a player like Joaquin. He cost Valencia 30 million euros, but played like he was worth 30 euros."

Koeman pulled few punches in the interview, and also claimed that PSV Eindhoven misrepresented the manner in which he left the Dutch club to join Valencia.

"I got permission from (PSV director) Jan Reker to speak with (Valencia)," he said. "If he had said no I would never have started talks with Valencia. PSV were ready - they had Martin Jol lined up and would get money for me too.

"On the morning of the press conference to announce my departure, Reker flew to London. He was never left with his back to the wall as he claimed. Valencia paid one million euros to PSV for me and PSV would have got another million if Valencia made it to the Champions League.

"If I had stayed with PSV I could have become the coach of Holland or Barcelona. I know I was on the shortlist of both."
