Liverani eyes UEFA Cup triumph
Palermo midfielder Fabio Liverani believes the club can win the UEFA Cup, after they beat Juventus last week.
Palermo gained a morale-boosting 2-1 win over Juventus last week, beating the Turin giants away, as the club rewrote history to gain their first Serie A victory over Juve since the 1961-62 season. The triumph has propelled the club into fourth place in the league standings. And Liverani feels the club should build from this win.
“We worked hard to get good results and hoped to reach this stage. Aside from our position in the table, I maintain we have at last got what we deserved.
“The only game where we could have got more was at Napoli, but looking at the overall performances I’d say we earned every point,” he told Channel 4 Football Italia.
Previous coach Stefano Colantuono was sacked after only one week into the season. But under Davide Ballardini, Liverani thinks the new coach has given them to the confidence to dream big, which includes a good run in the UEFA Cup.
“It is too early to say where we could end up. We are just at the start of the season and I am accustomed to counting up the total at the end,” Liverani added.
“Having said that, the UEFA Cup is not a taboo target and can be within our reach as long as we keep working hard and taking it one game at a time.”
