Portugal U21 v Italy U21 - Olympic play-off

Motta has Azzurri ambitions

Roma’s new signing Marco Motta has revealed his ambitions to be a first-team regular for the Italian national team.

The versatile player could make play for Roma against Genoa and he hopes he can step up from Under-21 captain to Azzurri regular.

“I am very enthusiastic about coming here. Roma are one of the best sides in the world and so of course I’m going to have extra pressure and responsibility on my shoulders.

“Naturally I have a lot to prove. I am captain of the Under-21 side and am proud to represent my nation. I would love to do so at senior level too, as that is the dream of every child who loves playing football.”

The defender could be in the starting XI for Sunday’s big game if Cicinho does not recover from injury in time.

“It’s a shame that at the moment there are so many injuries damaging the side. As I have always said, every training session is crucial and must feel like a Champions League game,” continued Motta.

“I have been used many times as a winger, occasionally as left-back, but if you ask which role I prefer, then I’d say right-back. I am adaptable, though.

“[Coach Luciano] Spalletti is trying to introduce me to the team’s system and I’m listening to all his great advice.

“Every Coach has a different methodology in training. Udinese are a fine side with great players, while here there are World Champions like Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi, so naturally I do notice some differences.”

The transfer was held up for a while by the price-tag, as Motta eventually joined in a co-ownership deal and will eventually complete the move in June for a total of around £6m.

“I cannot give a judgment on my own value, as only my performances can back that up. Udinese gave me that valuation and I thank them, as it means they respect me. We’ll have to see if I’m worth it.”
