Chievo vs Udinese Preview

Chievo coach Domenico Di Carlo believes his side's hunger to fight for every point will be instrumental in their relegation battle.

The Flying Donkeys returned to the winning ways after their 1-0 defeat against AC Milan with a 2-0 triumph at Siena last time out.

They go into tomorrow's clash against Udinese with an eight-point cushion over the drop zone with six games remaining.

"A victory on Saturday would mean a giant step towards defending our Serie A status," Di Carlo said.

"We are well aware that we face a difficult team who are doing very well at home and it's a challenging encounter.

"However, we have beaten Palermo and Lazio while holding Juventus to a draw in recent weeks.

"The important thing for us will be to get a result that allows us to move up in the standings."

Chievo will fancy their chances after they beat Udinese 1-0 the last time both teams met.

The men from Verona will be relying on in-form striker Sergio Pellissier to again come up with the goods in front of goal.

Pellissier, who will play alongside Erjon Bogdani, scored a brace at Siena and has notched eight goals in his team's past six encounters.

Chievo have an extremely tough fixture list from now until the end of the season and will be particularly keen to banish any lingering relegation fears with a victory against Udinese.

"We are working very hard to avoid the drop and we are getting there," said Pellissier.

"But we cannot slow down. After our game against Udinese, we face Roma, Inter and Genoa, teams that are still fighting for important aims this season.

"We hope to take as many points as possible in our next games."

Mid-table Udinese go into the encounter at the Bentegodi stadium with little to play for except pride.

The Bianconeri bounced back from their UEFA Cup elimination at the hands of Werder Bremen with a surprising 3-1 triumph over Fiorentina last weekend.

The result lifted Udinese to 10th in the Serie A standings.

But a return to Europe seems unlikely for Pasquale Marino's side.

With 10 points separating Udinese from sixth-place Roma, who hold the last European qualifying spot, their chances of cutting that deficit are slim.

"There are six games left to play and we want to end the campaign on a high," said club president Giampaolo Pozzo.

"I believe it's too late to think about qualifying for the Europe League.

"We would need to collect at least 15 points in our remaining games and hope that results in other games go our way.

"We just hope to take as many points as possible and climb up in the standings."

The visitors will be without injured quintet Damiano Ferronetti, Fernando Tissone, Damiano Ferronetti, Antonio Di Natale and Gaetano D'Agostino.

Chievo will have to overcome the absence of striker Stephen Makinwa, who has been sidelined for the rest of the season with a muscular problem.
