Fiorentina vs Roma Preview

Alberto Gilardino has warned Roma that Fiorentina will give their all at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Saturday.

With just six rounds of the league remaining, Fiorentina and Roma are among the teams vying for a top-four finish and a place in next season's Champions League.

The Viola saw a run of three successive wins ended last weekend with a 3-1 defeat at Udinese - a result which left Cesare Prandelli's men fifth in the table, two points behind Genoa.

Their lead over Roma was also cut to three points after the Giallorossi overcame Lecce 3-2.

And Gilardino is ready to don his battle armour for a match which could go a long way to deciding the future European direction of both clubs.

"The race (for the Champions League) is as important as any other," he said. "With three points we could stretch our lead over Roma and we are determined to do that.

"We're ready to fight for the game and the result. We're playing in front of our own fans and we want to do well.

"It will be difficult. In recent years Roma are a team who have always delivered the best football.

"But I hope it will be an entertaining match with many chances in front of goal."

Last weekend's meeting with Udinese was one to forget for the Viola, and Gilardino admits the best response would be three points tomorrow.

"It has been a season of ups and downs but we've always tried to go out together in the right spirit," he added.

"The dressing room has always been united. Udinese was a bad experience but this week we have worked hard on our midfield play to get ourselves in a winning position."

Adrian Mutu, Mario Santana and Massimo Gobbi are injured for the hosts, while Felipe Melo remains suspended for his part in a post-match brawl with Cagliari defender Diego Lopez two weeks ago.

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti has greater selection troubles ahead of the trip to Florence.

Cicinho, Alberto Aquilani, Mirko Vucinic, Vincenzo Montella, Jeremy Menez and Doni are absent while Philippe Mexes is banned.

There are also concerns over Francesco Totti, who complained of pain in his knee during training today.

"We don't know about Totti," said Spalletti. "Today he suffered a slight twinge in his knee but was able to return after 10 minutes.

"We will see tomorrow whether he can play but I'm hopeful."

A Champions League place is even further away for Roma, who have a five-point gap to make up on the top four.

But technical director Bruno Conti insists the team are not prepared to give up in the chase for a spot in Europe's top club competition.

"We believe in a Champions League place and until the maths tells us otherwise we have a duty to try," he said.

"But leaving aside the issues of what is at stake, we will have to play a great team in Fiorentina.

"Fiorentina are a very difficult opponent who can play football. There is a lot riding on this match.

"But the players have put everything into the race and will continue to do so."
