Baresi: Maldini insults not fair

Former teammate Franco Baresi has defended Paulo Maldini saying he did not deserve the abuse he received from fans last weekend.

Playing in his last match at the San Siro before retiring at the end of the season Maldini's farewell was not a happy one as his side lost 3-2 to Roma and the captain was roundy insulted by the Rossoneri Ultras.

Some of the fans held up a banners with the number six, referring to former player Franco Baresi and shouting "there is only one captain".

However, Baresi himself briefly commented on these events, claiming that Maldini was a class act. "I regret this, because Paolo does not deserve it," he said to Sky Sports on Monday.

The 1994 World Cup finalist then opted not to comment any further on the topic, as he found the situation embarrassing.

Maldini has spent his entire career at Milan - making his debut back in 1985 and clocking up over 900 appearances in all competitions.

With seven Scudetto titles, five Champions League trophies and 126 international caps to his name he is widely considered to be one of his generations best players - however he recently upset sections of the clubs supporters when criticising them for not backing the team when they were struggling for results.
