Balotelli target of racial abuse

18-year-old Inter Milan striker Mario Balotelli was racially abused by Roma fans on Saturday night.

Balotelli, who is Italian, but has Ghanaian roots, was in Rome at a training camp with the Italian under-21 squad ahead of their match against Denmark.

The striker was in a bar with several teammates when a group of Roma fans approached him and began verbally insulting him before throwing at least two bananas in his direction.

Balotelli is no stranger to receiving racial insults, having previously suffered abuse from Juventus fans which saw Juve forced to play a match behind closed doors.

The motivation for this recent episode is thought to have stemmed from a match against Roma earlier in the season when Balotelli made a gesture silencing the Roma Ultras after scoring a penalty kick.

Italy under-21 coach Pierluigi Casiraghi complimented the young striker on keeping a cool head following the incident.

"The boy has behaved well both with the team and in the specific incident yesterday when he didn't respond to verbal provocation," Casiraghi said.

Balotelli has scored three goals in six appearances for the under-21 side so far.
