Berlusconi latest to blast Madrid spending
AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi has launched a tirade against Real Madrid’s much publicised transfer spending over the summer so far.
Berlusconi is the latest among many club directors and footballing legends to speak out against the phenomenal total of £140 million that Madrid have spent so far on acquiring the services of Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Last week, Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton labeled Ronaldo's transfer "vulgar", while Dutch legend Johann Cruyff said that the duo that Madrid signed may be good, but were "simply not worth the money".
Barcelona President Joan Laporta, UEFA's Michel Platini and even Spain's Prime Minister have also berated the moves, calling the sums of money thrown around excessive.
Despite being directly involved and financially benefited by Kaka's move away from the San Siro, Berlusconi has joined the crusade against Madrid's spending, commenting on the transfers' detrimental effects to football as a whole.
"These are figures in football that are pure madness," he said to La Gazzetta Dello Sport.
"These figures bear no relation to the normal economy, and it is beyond common sense and decency."
Berlusconi further went on to controversially claim that "Kaka did not invent football", implying that even he, the beneficiary, thought the amount of money exchanged was excessive.
