Fiorentina vs Cagliari Preview

Fiorentina may not have found top form yet but will be confident ahead of facing a Cagliari side who have a poor record in Florence.

The Viola have won their last 14 meetings with Cagliari at the Artemio Franchi stadium and will fancy their chances despite having to do without pivotal striker Adrian Mutu.

Mutu sustained a thigh injury while on international duty with Romania last week and will be sidelined for a week.

The hosts do have other concerns on the horizon, with their Champions League Group match at Lyon on Wednesday, but midfielder Martin Jorgensen has called for focus against the Sardinian outfit.

"We are looking forward to our game at Lyon," said Jorgensen. "We want to do well in the Champions League but our focus right now is on beating Cagliari.

"We need our full concentration because we face a team that comes to Florence eager to claim their first win of the campaign.

"We cannot make the mistake of underestimating Cagliari."

Cesare Prandelli's men go into the game inspired by their 1-0 win against Palermo in the last round that marked their first triumph of the season.

A goal from Stevan Jovetic was the difference between the two sides as the Viola maintained their unbeaten run in the competition.

"We still need to improve," said Jorgensen. "The summer signings have yet to adapt to the team but we will get there.

"At this moment we are not playing at our best but we are nevertheless competitive."

A win on Sunday would be a morale boost in confidence for the Viola as they must brace themselves for a testing sequence of games which will see them face Lyon, Roma, Sampdoria, Livorno, Liverpool, Lazio and Juventus.

Viola fans will be hoping Alberto Gilardino can end his goalscoring drought having failed to find the back of the net so far this season, for club or country.

Gilardino will lead Fiorentina's attacking line with the trio of Marco Marchionni, Jovetic and Juan Vargas in support.

Rivals Cagliari travel to the mainland looking to bounce back from their disappointing display in their 3-1 defeat against Siena in the last round.

Cagliari coach Massimiliano Allegri was unimpressed with his team's performance and expects his players to step up their game come Sunday.

"I am angry," said Allegri. "To lose the first game at home against a team that is also battling this season to avoid the drop is not something to be proud of.

"We cannot allow ourselves to have a drop in concentration during a game like the one we endured against Siena.

"We need to remain focused for 90 minutes and that means we need to improve on our physical condition and try to avoid making stupid mistakes."

The visitors suffered a setback ahead of this weekend's game with experienced defender Francesco Pisano ruled out for a month with a knee injury. Lino Marzoratti will replace Pisano in Cagliari's starting XI.

Fiorentina defender Per Koldrup is doubtful for the encounter having sat out the last training session with a stomach flue.
