Materazzi: Refs are picking on me

Materazzi: Refs are picking on me

Inter Milan defender Marco Materazzi has hit out at the refereeing standards in Italy claiming he is being singled out.

Materazzi was particularly vocal following an incident involving Juventus midfielder Felipe Melo in the Old Lady's 2-2 draw with Genoa Thursday night.

The Brazilian was booked near the end of the match and appeared to direct a number of comments to the referee - a situation that Materazzi believes would have resulted in a red card if it had been him involved.

Speaking in Il Corriere dello Sport the international defender said "I am a bit like [coach Jose] Mourinho - I don't like it when I suffer injustices.

"Did you hear what Felipe Melo said after his booking? Shall I tell you? He said 'you son of a bitch' to the referee. Why was he not sent off ?

"The laws must be equal for everyone."

Materazzi went on to recall how he himself was sent off pre-season for a similar incident.

"It happened [to me] in the Trofeo TIM, and I only told the referee [Antonio] Damato that it was a shame he blew for a penalty !

"It was for a trophy that doesn't even mean anything and I paid a €5,000 fine. It's not good like this.

"This is absolutely not a protest against the refereeing system. But if you want to have a working relationship then you must have the same standards."

Inter Milan travel to Sampdoria on Saturday looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season and retain their position at the top of the table.
