Ranieri: We weren't in the game

Roma coach Claudio Ranieri admitted his team took a step backwards in their 1-1 Serie A draw at Catania.

Daniele De Rossi's equaliser deep in stoppage time handed the Eternal City outfit a point after Takayuki Morimoto had given Catania a first-half lead.

Catania dominated the encounter and were unlucky not to claim their first win of the season.

"My team was simply not in the game," said Ranieri. "We didn't play well.

"We knew going into the match that we had to play at a high tempo and we did not do that.

"The only thing that we had was this great will not to allow our opponents to claim all three points and in the end, we managed to make that happen."

The result marked Roma's second consecutive draw after two straight wins over Siena and Fiorentina under new boss Ranieri.

"The important thing is to know where we went wrong," said Ranieri.

"We must bounce back in our next game.

"We don't have the right approach to the game and I don't know why that is as I only recently arrived to the club.

"You cannot do well immediately but it is something we have to keep on working at."

Roma, who are ninth in the standings having collected eight points in six games, host Napoli next weekend.
