Fiorentina vs Lazio Preview

Fiorentina winger Marco Marchionni believes his side need fear no-one after beating Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Viola dominated the Barclays Premier League contenders in a 2-0 win and will face Lazio on Sunday with a chance to move top of Serie A.

"We know now that we can handle playing against anyone," Marchionni told the Corriere dello Sport.

"We had a very good night against the Reds, and the result has been used mainly to silence our critics.

"I guess we've enjoyed the moment, but we have to get back to reality now, and look towards our next two matches against Lazio and Juventus."

Teenage striker Stevan Jovetic got both goals in the victory, and Florence has taken the 19-year-old to its heart in the days since.

Local vendors have sold out of "Jo-Jo wigs" as fans scramble to mimic the Montenegrin.

They have even begun singing the same anthem once reserved for club legend Roberto Baggio when he himself broke through as a youngster.

Jovetic is certain to take his place in the side as Cesare Prandelli plots a way to the top of the league.

A win would catapult Fiorentina from fourth to first if Sampdoria, Juventus and Inter Milan all fail to win.

That may prove to be asking too much, but Fiorentina are determined to keep their side of the bargain against a Lazio side struggling for league form with only eight points to show from six games.

"We are playing a team that is not doing very well at the moment, but they are very good at creating traps and making it difficult to score," Marchionni added.

"Every player can improve, and of course now, like my team-mates, I am enjoying this positive period that I am going through both mentally and physically."

While their league form has been disappointing, Lazio thrashed Levski Sofia 4-0 in the Europa League on Thursday night, a timely confidence boost ahead of this testing encounter.

"We needed an important result, and I think we deserve credit for playing very well in this game and having the right focus and determination to get a good result," said Tommaso Rochi.

"It was important to win. It's an important result for the morale, it's important for the Europa League because now we will go to face a delicate clash like the one in Florence."

Despite being held to a 1-1 draw with Palermo last time out, Lazio can be satisfied in knowing they dominated the game and on another day might have scored several goals.
